Dr hab. n. med. Maciej Śmietański

Prof. Dr. Hab. Med. Maciej Śmietański (b. 1969)
Specialist in General Surgery (2nd Degree)

A graduate of the Medical Academy of Gdańsk, where he worked from the time of graduation until 2009 as coordinator of the hernia treatment group and leader of the Polish Hernia Study Group. From 2009, he developed a center for hernia treatment and education in herniology in Puck, where he worked until 2018. For the past three years, he has led his own hernia surgery team at the LUX MED Hospital in Gdańsk. He also continues teaching students at the Medical University of Gdańsk. Since 2021, he has been a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.

He served on the boards of the Video Surgery Section and the Herniology Section of the Association of Polish Surgeons (Chairman of the Section until 2023), and was Secretary for Scientific Affairs of the European Hernia Society (EHS). He is currently a Board Member of the EHS with the rank of Honorary Ambassador for Central and Eastern Europe. In 2009, he co-created the National Groin Hernia Repair Registry (KROPP). Between 2009 and 2014, he led a scientific consortium of the Medical University of Gdańsk and Gdańsk University of Technology in the EU-funded program: “Improving the Quality of Abdominal Hernia Treatment Using Synthetic Implants.”

Prof. Śmietański is the author or co-author of more than 70 scientific publications and editor of the Polish Standards for Groin Hernia Treatment. He has delivered invited lectures in many European Union countries, the USA, Russia, and China. Between 1999 and 2003, he collaborated with the EU Hernia Trialists Collaboration, and in 2009 he co-created the European Guidelines for Groin Hernia Treatment and the EHS classification of abdominal wall hernias. Between 2017 and 2019, he was one of the leaders in establishing the global guidelines for groin hernia treatment (currently among the most frequently cited works in hernia surgery literature worldwide). Until 2020, he served as Deputy Director of the European Registry for Abdominal Wall Hernias (EuraHS).

Among his major projects are:

a) Polish Hernia Study Group – two multicenter randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning lightweight materials in groin hernia surgery (publications in Hernia and British Journal of Surgery) – Project Leader, 2003–2012

b) European Group for the Introduction of Groin Hernia Treatment Standards (2008–2011), conducted under a scientific grant from the European Hernia Society – Group Member (Hernia publication)
